Item details

The beadspanner is a multi-purpose lampworking tool for aligning/shaping/flattening glass when making beads, buttons, cabochons and interchangeable toppers. The second photo describes some of its possible uses.

The beadspanner is made of stainless steel (which does not stick to molten glass), is 2mm thick, and weighs approx. 65g.

A brief history:
During spring 2010 I started making end-of-mandrel cabochons. I didn't have a flat lap at the time, and it soon become obvious that I needed to put a lot of work into flattening the cab bottoms so that they could be set properly in jewellery. I took my small graphite paddle to the ring-saw to make a slot which would accommodate a mandrel (third photo), and it made such a difference to the speed at which I could achieve a nice, flat cab bottom!

Then I met Maria Louisa of, who told me I could easily make the tool in stainless steel. That made me think I could make a tool which is a lot more versatile than the original "glass aligner paddle", and I designed the beadspanner.
