Early in Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein", young Victor Frankenstein goes off to university. Having thrown himself into his studies at school, Frankenstein reaches a point where he believes he understands all the facets of natural philosophy. Being fascinated by "the structure of the human frame, and, indeed, any animal endued with life," he begins to focus on where the "principal of life" originates. Going further in his studies, he concludes: "To examine the causes of life, we must first have recourse to death. I became acquainted with the science of anatomy, but this was not sufficient; I must also observe the natural decay and corruption of the human body."
The topic of this quote made me think of old gravestones. Many old grave markers feature a skull with wings topping the stone. I felt a gravestone shape, with macabre topper, would be a fitting design to accompany this quote about life and death.
