Item details

These little Bali bee carved bone beads are as sweet as they are petite, and are sure to create a buzz around whoever wears them.

Great for gardeners or for use as a guru bead in a mala, they were hand-carved exclusively for Indounik in Bali, Indonesia.

They have a distinctive Balinese appearance, with their textured wings resembling the heirloom pattern, patra punggel.

They also have a carved undercarriage, as you can see in my third photo. (Use the left or right arrow to scroll through the different images.)

Bees are known as lebah in the Indonesian language and nyawan in the Balinese language.

Lawar Nyawan is a traditional Balinese dish made from bee larvae. I've eaten a substantial meal of it during a bee-keeping workshop at the Ubud-based permaculture foundation, Yayasan Tri Hita Karana Bali, and I have to say it was "enak sekali' - most delicious.

Bee larvae are found in the honeycomb and that has to be boiled to extract them. They are then combined with Balinese spices and papaya, to create a spicy sweet-flavoured dish, sometimes referred to as a salad, that is crunchy, light, and nutritious.
The days aren't discarded or collected - they are bees that are burned with sweetness or maddened by the sting. The struggle continues - the journeys go and come between honey and pain. ~ Pablo Neruda
