Early in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, we meet the famous Doctor as he is pursuing his monstrous creation across the polar ice caps. Dr. Frankenstein has been rescued by a ship exploring the far North Sea and is preparing to relate his story to Robert Walton, a man aboard the ship. The Doctor has told Mr. Walton only that he has suffered great evils, and expects to die soon. Mr. Walton “felt the greatest eagerness to hear the promised narrative, partly from curiosity and partly from a strong desire to ameliorate his fate if it were in my power.” Alas, Dr. Frankenstein tells him, “it is useless; my fate is nearly fulfilled.” It is here that the story of the creature’s creation begins.
I imagined a simple sampler to go with this simple quote. When playing around with border designs, I hit on the idea of something that looked vaguely like the electric currents in a Jacob’s Ladder (as are so often shown in Frankenstein movies). By repeating this design around the quote, I have alluded to the cause of Frankenstein’s ultimate fate (the lack of electricity being used in the book notwithstanding).
This pattern measures 120 x 100 stitches. The sample was worked on 14 count white Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures 8.57 x 7.14 inches. It took about 12 hours to stitch.
