A counted coloured blackwork embroidery pattern. Fits neatly into a 6-inch hoop when stitched on 28 count fabric.

Elizabeth, Countess of Hardwick, better known as Bess is one of the most famous women in Derbyshire's history. This pattern is based on blackwork embroidery that can be seen on a dress that Bess is wearing in a portrait. Married and widowed four times, Bess became extremely wealthy and spent large sums of money on new building projects. She was responsible for the original Chatsworth House, the site of which is still home to her descendants the Duke of Devonshire and his family.

This blackwork pattern allows you to stitch your own piece of English Tudor chic! As this is a repeated pattern, you can easily expand it to make a cushion cover or tote bag. You could also give it a completely different look by using modern colours. Black and red are the traditional colours for this type of embroidery but you might have other ideas for how you want to finish it.

DESIGN DETAILS
Stitch count: 72 x 72
Size: When stitched on 14 or 28 count fabric 5.2 x 5.2 inches (13 x 13cm)
Threads: DMC Perle cotton (2 colours) and Kreinik metallic braid
Techniques: Back stitch

Note: If you prefer to use stranded cotton then please do so. The shade numbers are the same.

Pattern file includes colour symbol chart, symbol key and colour image of completed design for reference.

The second file contains instructions and stitching tips.

I do not currently accept custom orders but I am happy to accept suggestions for patterns, especially birds. Please get in touch if you have a favourite bird you'd like me to design.

Cross stitch is a very time-consuming form of embroidery and unfortunately this means that making larger cross stitched items to sell is not practical; they would simply be too expensive. However, I do make small cross stitched items such as ornaments and greeting cards. See my shop sections for details.

All patterns are currently only designed for hand embroidery and are only available in PDF format.

Yes! Birds are one of my favourite subjects and I'll definitely be adding more over time. If you favourite my shop you will receive updates every time I add something new. Do you have a favourite bird you'd like me to design? Send me a convo and I'll do my best to make it happen!
