We use a Green/Black Silicon Carbide blend for our first stage. Green Silicon Carbide works faster than Black Silicon Carbide because it is harder and stays sharp longer. We only use this in the first stage because that is where the most "grinding" takes place. The subsequent stages are meant to finely sand and polish so the harder material is not necessary or useful at these stages. Both Green Silicon Carbide and Black Silicon Carbide are made from silica sand and coke. Hexagonally shaped, it breaks into very sharp particles. Green Silicon Carbide is harder than Black Silicon Carbide, coming in at a 9.4 on Mohs scale of hardness where Black Silicon Carbide is a 9.1 on Mohs scale. Green Silicon Carbide is 2600 on the Knoop scale where Black Silicon Carbide ranges from 2480-2550. Green Silicon Carbide is extremely pure; it is of a higher purity than Black Silicon Carbide.
Helpful Tips Below
Generally, there are 4 stages to tumbling/polishing. Each stage runs for a week to 10 days in the tumbler. After that the grit needs to be changed. In the first stage, if the rough/sharp edges are not worn down enough after 10 days repeat the first stage with fresh grit.
We offer a variety of grits for your tumbling/polishing needs.
Stage 1: (Silicone Carbide)
Extra coarse silicone carbide grit for very hard stones (50)
Coarse silicone carbide grit for hard stones (80 or 60/90)
Stage 2: (Silicone Carbide)
Fine silicone carbide grit can be used for stage 1 for soft stones and stage 2 for harder stones (120, 220 or 120/220)
Stage 3: (Silicone Carbide)
Pre-polish silicone carbide grit for all stones (500, 600 or 500/600)
Stage 4: (Aluminum Oxide)
Polish aluminum oxide grit for all stones (1200)
Stage 4 or 5: (Silicone Carbide)
Polish super fine silicone carbide grit for all stones (1500) - this can be used in the 4th stage or run this grit in a 5th stage for a glass like finish
These can be purchased individually in any weight denomination that fits your needs or we have pre-made kits for your specific size tumbler. We have kits available with or without plastic pellets. Plastic pellets help to replace volume as you lose rock volume while tumbling. They help carry the grit to the stones or media you are tumbling as well. Another benefit of plastic pellets is they are reusable! They float in water so they can be scooped out with a kitchen strainer. When reusing your plastic pellets make sure to reuse them with the same stage they were used with previously. They carry grit and will contaminate the other stages if you don’t reuse them properly.
