I am so thrilled to offer these gorgeous and well-functioning supported spindles, also known as takhlis! Spin lace weight or thread weight yarn with ease. Weighing about 7 grams, this one features a gorgeous old solid silver Barber lady quarter coin, face up on a tan laminated birch wood 6" shaft. The coin whorl is press fit, leaving a perfectly balanced support spindle/takhli for your spinning delight. It spins for so long! Beautiful and well-balanced -- you will adore it!
As a jeweler who uses coins as raw materials (which is, indeed, legal) and an avid spinner, I started to dream up a way to combine the two vocations. Of course, I am not a machinist, nor a wood turner, and I called my good friend Michael Copeland, a longtime crafter of woodwind instruments, to ask for advice on finding and drilling the exact center of the coins. To my delight, he took it upon himself to create the jigs necessary to make me some spindles! Since he already had the jigs made, when I told him that I thought other people would love these, too, he was happy to make more. I sent Michael some coins and some lovely double pointed knitting needles, and he set to work on his lathes, creating these gorgeous and extremely well-functioning supported spindles! Yay!!
