Renfield, the lunatic patient of Dr. Seward in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, has been collecting flies, which he then fed to spiders, who were in turn fed to birds, at which point Renfield ate the birds. Whatever he hoped would come of this proved unsuccessful and he had once more begun collecting flies to feed to spiders. One day he became very excited, and spoke of “the Master” being at hand. As the day progressed, however, he grew quiet and sat on his bed. Trying to draw him out, Dr. Seward asked after the “pets”. “At first he made no reply, but at length said testily: - ‘Bother them all! I don’t care a pin about them.’ ‘What?’ I said. ‘You don’t mean to tell me that you don’t care about spiders?’” Renfield then speaks in riddles and breaks out of the asylum that night, trying to reach his Master.
In designing this pattern, I made a basic sampler with the text spelled out clearly and a simple, single line border. I then imagined a nest of spiders swarming the words, dangling off letters and making webs in the corners.
This pattern measures 120 x 110 stitches. The sample was worked on white 14ct Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures 8.6” by 7.9”. It took about 14 hours to stitch.
