I made the Santa and his elf helper (separate listings but so cute together) many years ago and remade them a couple years ago because I'd lost my notes, so I have made a new one and reworked my notes into a real pattern (not just scribbled notes on paper) to use either plain worsted weight yarns or combinations of worsted weights and either worsted with eyelash or fluffy yarns on the beard and hair.
The patterns are fairly fast and between an easy to intermediate, once you master the loop stitches, it is all single crochet (sc), increases (inc) and decreases (dec). The hardest part is if you used eyelash or fluffy yarns for the beard and hair because it can be hard to see the stitches on the row before. Using worsted weight yarns, even the sparkly Christmas yarns, makes this pattern both fast and easy to work up for that last minute stocking (for the new brother- or sister-in-law or the new baby) or for the work Christmas gift exchange if you know someone like me who is a freak for Christmas.
You can even use cross stitch to personalize the stocking with a name on the hat bands.
