I specialize in creating original contemporary art jewelry using labor-intensive classical techniques. I combine original cloisonné enamels with precious metals and precious and semi-precious gemstones, using hand fabrication, bezel setting, 22 karat gold granulation, 18 karat and 14 karat gold, and sterling silver.
In my granulated jewelry I draw on the tradition of the Etruscans and ancient Greeks. Hundreds of tiny balls of 22 karat gold, as small as .016 inches, are arranged one-by-one into intricate patterns. The granules are fused without the use of solder to a base of 22 karat gold. One moment too long in the intense heat of the torch and the entire piece melts. One moment too little and the granules feel to fuse to the base. Consummate skill and experience are required to gauge the exact moment; hours of painstaking work hang in the balance with each piece that it is created.
The effects possible with the technique of cloisonné enameling are particularly appealing. Luminous multicolored depths of the cloisonné beautifully enhance the rich effects possible with granulation in 22 karat gold, and I combined the two whenever I can.
Cloisonné is a French term which refers to cells of colored enamels separated by thin strips of metal. Each cloisonné painting is started by bending thin ribbons of pure gold and arranging them on edge to create the linear elements of the design. I use my original drawings as diagrams. The resulting cells are wet packed with grains of enamel using a tiny paintbrush. The pieces dried and then fired in a preheated kiln at 1200–1500°F. Up to 20 firings can be required to refine and develop the many layers of enamel colors. The enameled piece is then ground and polished like a fine gemstone. It is framed in a custom-made setting, using hand-fabrication, hand-forging, lost wax casting and other techniques, often enhanced by precious or semi-precious gemstones.
I am a lifelong artist. I studied fine art at Yale and have an extensive professional background in visual design. I studied 22 karat gold granulation, cloisonné enamel, and a number of other techniques under the direction of some of the best master goldsmiths and enamelists in the country. My work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions, the best galleries nationwide, public and private collections, and won awards for many years. Each piece is designed to be worn and give enjoyment for years.
