Chinese 5th Rank Silver Pheasant Civil Badge Tapestry Kit
Rank Badges were worn as a symbol of civil and military rank the wearer had attained, similar to the medals of rank we use in the West. The badge would originally be an embroidered or woven square measuring about 15 – 20cm (6- 8 in) square, indicating one of the nine ranks the wearer had achieved.
It is common to show the bird or animal looking toward a red sun, which is thought to come from the ancient proverb ‘keep your eye on the sun and rise high’. Backgrounds are filled with symbols of good fortune such as, clouds, bats, water and mountains.
