Here are some basic tips on how to start new dreadlocks, maintain mature dreadlocks, or put in temporary dreadlocks. These instructions are not all-inclusive or detailed. They are merely a guide to help you with your choice of hairstyle – dreadlocks. There are many articles, books, and websites you can find to help you. You may choose to follow any, all, or none of the methods you find. Whatever works for you is what matters.

Dreads are a very permanent decision. Sure if you decide at the last minute you don’t like dreads, you can slather on intensive oils and conditioners and pick them out if you want, or you can just cut them out. Neither are very easy. If you don’t want to commit just yet to permanent dreads, or just want a new look for a bit, try temporary dreads. Just section hair in uniform sections all over your head and if you wish you may use tiny Rubber Bands to tie off the sections at the root. Make sure hair is dry and unwashed I would not recommend using dreadlock lock powder or dread locking accelerator if you just want temp dreads. Both of those products make your hair dryer, knot and tangle way too much, too quickly just for temp dreads. Dread wax is perfect to use as it does wash out with soap and water, yet is strong enough to hold your temp dreads together. An added bonus is that it has ingredients that are good for your hair, dreaded or not. Lightly tease and backcomb your sections of hair one at a time. You may choose to use the Dreadlock Comb we have or any solid tooth pet comb will work. We also have Rubber Bands that come with our kit or you can convo us if you need just the bands and we can send you some. You can buy rubber bands yourself- just make sure to get the tiny ones to use. After you lightly tease each section scrape off a wee bit of dread wax off the top of the jar with your fingernail. Take that bit of wax and warm it by rubbing it between your palms. Then palm roll the lightly teased and backcombed section of hair from root to tip. This is done until you have your temp dreads. You only need to use a very little amount of dread wax for each section. The point of dread wax is to hold your dreadlocks together and to smooth them out as well as to add good moisture to your hair and feed your hair nutrients. When you don’t want your temp dreads anymore, just wash hair really well with warm soapy water, condition well, rinse, then use a wide tooth comb to comb them out. You may use our Pure Liquid Shampoo For Dreadlocks if you wish as it is healthy for dreaded as well as undreaded hair.

Our products can be used to maintain mature dreads as well. Our Pure Liquid Shampoo For dreadlocks is healthy for both dreaded and undreaded hair. Very little is needed to do its job. Palm roll dreads often. Our Dreadlock Lock Powder is awesome to use to start or maintain dreads. To do maintenance, just sprinkle some Lock Powder on the area of hair that needs dreaded or tightened and backcomb, rub, twist, crochet etc. Works fast and is a wonderful product. It is good also for touching up those roots as well. Our Locking Accelerator is good to use to maintain your dreadlocks in moderation. It may dry out mature dreads too much if used to often, but we add just a little pinch of sea salt to our Locking Accelerator and more than enough aloe vera and essential oils to even out the drying process with much needed moisture. Locking Accelerator is a great tool for maintaining dreads as it can give an all over tightening and smoothing to your dreadlocks. There is no need to use a lot of either the dreadlock powder or the locking accelerator! Our dread wax is good for your hair as it helps to tighten, smooth, fortify, and moisturize your dreadlocks as it feeds them with much needed nutrients. There is no need to use it very often or to use a lot of products. Use products or not, what matters is what works for you and your hair.

Prep your hair by washing it but not using conditioner. Towel dry hair until damp. Leave as is, or for extra knotting power spray our Locking Accelerator all over your hair. Let air dry or use a blow dryer to completely dry the hair. Section off uniform areas of your hair and tie off at roots with rubber bands, string, etc. Sprinkle a wee bit of Locking Powder on the areas of hair to be knotted to make them knot much quicker than normal. Tightly backcomb and tease your sections of hair one section at a time. After you tease and backcomb a section as tight as it will go, scrape off a wee bit of Dread Wax off the top of the jar with your fingernail. Warm wax by rubbing wax between your palms. Palmroll from root to tip. Palmroll, Palmroll, Palmroll. You may need to backcomb and tease the section more. Palmroll, Palmroll, Palmroll! Do this for each section. Use just a wee bit of wax to hold your new dreads together.
You may choose to backcomb, wool rub or go natural. With any method you may choose to use our products or not. What matters is what works for you and your hair. You may choose to use a number of methods to start your new dreads or no methods and that is ok. Just remember to do what works for you and that is what is important.
