When I moved to Turkey, many years ago now, the only 'language' I had in common with my husband's female relatives was knitting. I loved to see how they created slippers for their entire families, feats of engineering that look shapeless when off, but perfectly conformed to the wearer's foot when on.
I've adapted our family's simple slipper to add a lace top for beauty and 1x1 rib sole for strength.

gauge: 8 rows by 6 stitches = 1"
