Item details

This listing is for one whole calf skin hide handmade by our family at our tannery in the Hudson Valley, NY. The price is for the entire hide; sizes range from 5 to 7 square feet. Our browns range in color from Tan to Honey Brown to Chocolate Brown.

Calf leather is a classic addition to your supply inventory. It has a very soft, suede-like feel with delicate texture and character. At a thickness of 2.5 ounces (approximately .6mm to 1mm), this leather is best for lightweight accessories, bookbinding, and other craft projects. Our hides are tanned and dyed in small batches, so each hide is unique and color contrast varies by skin and size.

Our Etsy shop features our quick-sale items that ship directly from our tannery inventory. These items are one-off pieces that are perfect for the home crafter, maker, and those interested in dipping their toes into leather and parchment application. Most of the colors are the result of custom requests and new color experiments. Because our leather is handmade from local hides, color variation, texture, and character are to be expected, but we think this is part of their charm.

We tan our leathers with a chestnut vegetable tannage, and they are formulated to satisfy requirements for the bookbinding and conservation fields. We use aniline dyes, and our hides have a natural matte finish. Aniline dying is a water soluble, immersion dye process, also called drum dyed. We do not spray dye or use plastic or other unnatural coatings.

Message us with any questions - and happy crafting!
