Item details

“Beloved and venerable parent” counted cross stitch sampler pattern.

This listing is for a PDF copy of the sampler pattern, which is sold as an instant digital download. Included with the pattern is a document containing a DMC floss color chart (which can be modified to suit the stitcher’s tastes) as well as any other relevant information about working the pattern.

This sampler can be worked in about 12 hours (less if the Greek swirl border is worked rather than the colorful Book of Kells design) and would make a great, semi-last minute present for any beloved parent!

In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the young doctor has completed work on his famous creature and been thrown into illness, aghast at what he’s done. After having been nursed back to health by a family friend, he then receives a letter from his father. In this letter, Dr. Frankenstein learns of the death of his young brother at the hands of an unknown assailant. He races home and, waiting for his father to awaken, thinks on the past: “Six years had elapsed, passed as a dream but for one indelible trace, and I stood in the same place where I had last embraced my father before my departure for Ingolstadt. Beloved and venerable parent! He still remained to me.”

In designing this sampler, I wanted a simple piece, putting most of the focus on the words. The use of the word “venerable” made me think of The Venerable Bede, and sent my thoughts further into things of great age. To that end, I designed two different side borders that could be used, depending on the stitcher’s tastes. The first, more colorful design, is modeled after one of the highly illuminated pages from the Book of Kells (including the color scheme). The second is a more simple Greek spiral design.

The pattern includes both borders, as well as instructions on swapping out one for the other in the design.

This pattern (as stitched in the sample) measures 66 by 80 stitches. The sample was worked on white 14ct Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures 4 ¾” by 5 ¾”. It took about 12 hours to stitch.
