This listing is for one 50 gram box of 16 micron Sharlea Ultrafine Merino, unwashed raw wool. Photos show a box of 13.3 micron Sharlea, you will receive a similar box filled with 16 micron count fleece.
Sharlea fleece is coated and the sheep are raised in covered barns resulting in a fleece that is almost immaculate as shown in the photos. This is a true spinning experience and one that you'll want to work from the beginning so I've chosen not to process the fleece in any way.
Sharlea branded fleece comes from Saxon Merino sheep raised in accordance with the guidelines of the Sharlea Sheep Society. The sheep are raised with utmost care, fed special feed to encourage healthy sheep with an ultrafine fleece and they generally live 50% longer than field raised merinos.
I highly recommend washing this fleece by the lock using Margaret Stove's methods. Her new DVD from Interweave called Spinning for Lace outlines her methods for preparing and spinning ultrafine merino wool and is an excellent resource. Properly handled, Sharlea Ultrafine Merino can have a yield as high as 85% of raw weight. There is virtually no dirt or debris and unlike field raised merino, the lanolin content is low. The last photo of a spun sample on a spindle (not included with the listing :) was spun on the fly from unwashed locks that had been played with in my shop sample box and even so, you can see how incredibly fine and even I was able to spin it.
Your fleece will ship compressed with the box packed flat via USPS First Class Mail to save you money. If you prefer Priority Mail, please convo Bitsy for pricing prior to ordering.
This fiber is soft and wonderful. However, not prime. Was gummy with old dried lanolin. This was a small disappointment considering the price. The staple lengths were also very different from lock to lock.
All shipping prices quoted are for USPS first class mail unless otherwise noted, please convo me with your zip code or country if you would like a quote on faster shipping options.
Paypal only, please. PA 6% sales tax charged to all shipments of taxable items within the state of Pennsylvania.
