Item details

This is my design inspired by Chinese ethnic needlework.

Cross stitch was used in Chinese ethnic needlework for hundreds of years but did not received as much attention as deserved because of lack of proper research and documentation. The patterns shown in Chinese antique needlework contain astonishing art and cultural elements. These kinds of antique needlework tend to be large items ranging from scarves, apron, pillowcase, vest, undergarment, to bed sheet, curtain, wall hanging piece. It will not be feasible to reproduce those pieces. Instead, I try to display the beauty of those ethnic work by extraction and adaptation from the originals.

Like other traditional Chinese elements such as dragon, pine trees, crane, phoenix is also commonly seen in Chinese crafts.

Albeit an imaginary bird, phoenix has existed in Chinese culture for several thousand years. As the most supreme among birds, it is commonly used to symbolize females of nobility or royalty, whereas dragon as the symbol of the males of the same class. With its association with royalty, treasure, and wealth, phoenix is frequently used as motifs in traditional needlework and other kinds of craft. This design is extracted from a cross stitched bed sheet now privately collected.

More information about the background of this sampler and more sharing about Chinese ethnic needlework can be found in my website and my Facebook Page:
