Organic Opalka Tomato Seed, AKA Polish Torpedo, non-GMO, Grown in the USA, Heirloom, Open-Pollinated
- Question? Contact the seller
Unlike other Etsy sellers that buy a large package of seed from a seed company or vendor and break it down into smaller packets, we grow all our own seed and tend them by hand throughout the entire cycle from seed to seed.
Species: Solanum lycopersicum (Lycopersicon esculentum).
Opalka, also known as Polish Torpedo, is a Polish heirloom tomato that was brought to Amsterdam, New York, in the early 1900s by the Opalka family. An Opalka daughter married a man by the name of Carl Swidorski. Swidorski would be the coworker of tomato aficionado Carolyn Male. Male introduced the variety to the Seed Savers Exchange in the 1990s and listed it as one of the 100 tomatoes featured in her book, "100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden".
Opalka has beautiful red fruits that are long and somewhat carrot to torpedo shaped on vines that are vigorous but have somewhat wispy, regular shaped foliage. One of the best paste type tomatoes I have ever grown. It has excellent sweet flavor and is fairly productive. Indeterminate. Matures about 80-90 days after transplanting.
We recommend growing Opalka tomatoes in full sun. They do not require a pollinator in order to produce fruit. Planting and care instructions are included on the back of your receipt with each purchase.
These seeds were hand harvested from disease-free, organically-grown fruits grown near Tomah, Wisconsin, during the summer and fall of 2016. Although we are not certified organic because our operation occurs at a residence as part of a Seed Savers Exchange membership rather than a large scale farm, we follow the same practices used by organic farmers for growing our stock plants and the AOSA Standards for seed viability and quality control standards used by commercial seed companies.
