This sewing pattern will show you how to make a simple but effective Rag Quilt. The easy to learn method is a great way to quickly create a soft quilt for a cot or bed without having to layer large pieces of wadding and lining, the whole quilt it created as you go along making this suitable for beginners and improvers.
I have included measurements for three sizes; a cot, single bed and double bed. All the measurements are in centimetres and inches to suit both European and world-wide buyers.
The pattern has full size printable templates for the rag squares and includes many close up photographs to demonstrate the method, every step of the way. There are no difficult seams, only straight machine stitching.
For this quilt I have used a soft flannel cotton fabric for the front. It has a slight brushed effect which frays well when washed to create lots of those lovely ruffled seams. I have used a plain quilting cotton for the backing. You can use any light to medium weight cotton fabric for this design but using soft flannel fabric produces the best ruffles. Please note that to create the ruffled effect the finished quilt will need to be machine washed (and preferably tumble dried) – please bear this in mind when deciding on the size to make.
Fabric: you will need three basic fabrics, a soft flannel for the front, some matching cotton fabric for the back and some 2oz polyester wadding or battoning to give it loft and bounce and keep you warm on those winter nights.
Equipment: You will need some basic sewing equipment such as pins, tape measure, good quality fabric scissors or snippers, fabric marker, matching thread, paper or card for templates and an iron to press your fabric before you start if it is creased.
