Paw Paw (Asimina triloba) is an Ancient Plant with multiple intriguing Uses...This Beautiful Native Plant feeds both Butterflies and Humans...and is an easy to grow plant in the Young Permaculture Garden.
A Bit of Plant Culture...
Early documentation from the Spanish de Soto Expedition of 1541 cites that North Americans were cultivating Paw Paws for Fruit Production west of the Mississippi River.
The plant and the fruit go by many names today...Indiana Banana, American Custard Apple, Banango, and Graviola. All refer to the large yellow fruited desert fruit with a custard-like texture.
Paw Paws are USDA Classed as Very Common in the Wild in most of the United States. However, it is considered endangered and threatened in New York and several other portions of New England.
In the Wild, this plant will form Clonal Colonies in Understory, Water Edges, and Gully Bottoms out of the Wind.
Because the Colony is most often derived from a singular plant, little fruit is produced if fruiting is your goal. The most productive fruit production comes from Cross-Pollination of two native trees grown in different areas or regions.
As a Colony Production Plant, the Paw Paw is highly effective as Habitat Restoration and Wildlife Refuge.
Because of the large, deeply green leaf, the Paw Paw has a Tropical Allure in the Residential Garden.
The Paw Paw Tree bear both male and female flowers, and require cross-pollination for fruit production. Since the Plants are Insect-Pollinated, it is critical to use no insecticides on Fruit Production Trees. This is often another cause of low to no fruit production. Despite the USDA Classification of Very Common, Paw Paw is an Uncommon Plant for Availability in the Nursery Trade....and when purchased from a nursery, it is likely from One Source, which would diminish fruit production as well.
The Spring Blooms are a Reddish Maroon Color, which are charming to look at, but have an unpleasant scent. A portion of the Plant's Rarity is the scent of the Paw Paw's Blooms, Leaves, Twigs and Branches. The scent is so unpleasant that a mixture of the Paw Paw's leaves can be used as a highly effective organic insecticide.
The Paw Paw Tree is a Host Plant for the Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides Marcellus). The Unpleasant Scent of the Paw Paw transfers to the Swallowtail Pups and protects them from Predators. Scientists believe the same scent keeps Deer and Squirrels from eating the Plants and the Fruits. In fact, The Paw Paw has been used as a Natural Scented Fence in regions heavily populated with Deer.
The Paw Paw Tree is a Fast Growing Flowering Tree in good conditions. The plant must be kept shaded for the first two to three years and keep it out of any harmful wind. This Native Plant benefits from mulch and medium moisture until the plant is well established. Once established, the Paw Paw is consider Drought Tolerant and Hardy.
Paw Paw is a Temperate Fruit Tree that seldom reaches more than 20 foot at maturity. It creates a Pyramidal Shape and only begins to bloom after the Second to Third Year. Optimum Fruit Production is in Full Sun with a lot of Organic Matter and Two Inches of Hardwood Mulch. If sited in Partial Shade, the Plant will grown more Open and Production may be lessened somewhat. The PawPaw is listed as viable in USDA Zone 5a through 9.

Shipping & policies
We ship in the Order of Paid Invoices...and while our goal is prompt shipment of all orders. However shipping delays can occur during period of High Sales (Spring Planting and Christmas) or due to periods of Severe Weather. We routinely do not ship some plants during the Heat of August. If in doubt as to the specific shipping date of the items you purchased, please send us a note!...
We welcome your messages or special requests. We attempt to respond to all messages promptly...sometimes, the response requires a bit of time to research.
Our Growing Philosophy....We propagate through seedlings, cuttings, and division of well-established plants. We do not use chemicals and allow the plant to establish root systems naturally. This may - or may not - create a smaller plant or a longer growing period than the 'Treated with Nitrogen' plants visible at Big Box Stores.
We do not grow hundreds of any one plant, but prefer to grow hundreds of different plants instead...Numbers of plants are often limited.
We offer many native varieties because we like them and strongly believe that the Heritage of Natives should be retained. We Never collect them from the wild. We grow them from cuttings or seeds from our own Garden and Property.
We ship with excess soil removed from the root system. The roots are wrapped in dampened materials and securely encased in plastic. Each plant is labeled as to the common and botanical names. We ship USPS. We have been using this method for more than 30 years and have found it to be highly reliable...
We routinely ship Plant Materials within the Continental USA. Alaska, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands require additional shipping costs...and we will create a Designated Listing for your additional shipping and handling costs.
We can not replace or refund Plant, Seed or Cutting material that has been confiscated by a governmental agency...regardless of the reason. We can no longer maintain current information on State Regulations for Live Plant Shipment. It is the Buyer's Responsibility to know when a plant is considered "non-shippable" into their state.
Due to USDA regulations, we ship no plants, seeds, or cuttings to Hawaii.
You do not have to be home to receive your package as we do not require signatures. Neither do we mark the boxes with the contents because this gives the US Postal Service the option of non-delivery if no-one is home.
