Here is a truly amazing and unique opal. It has amazing multicolored fire all over. The front has been carved into a free-form shape, and polished.
I got the rough at the Tuscon gem show in 2015, and the stone sat for quite a while waiting to tell me what to do with it. The front was covered in brown sandstone, with patches of turquoise colored fire peeking through and the back was covered in the strange layer of of black. I studied the black material trying to figure out what it was. I noticed what appears to be two small crystals of tourmaline embedded in the bottom edge of the stone. I believe that this opal formed alongside a larger piece of black tourmaline, and that is what caused the black color on the back. It may be a different mineral than tourmaline that forms in a similar crystal habit. I left the two little needles of tourmaline in the finished stone to authenticate the natural origin of the stone.
The rest of the stone is pure fire with a honey body color. You can only see the body color if you hold it up to a strong light source. Otherwise it is pure fire in almost any lighting environment.
This stone would make an amazing addition to any opal collection, and could be used in several types of jewelery. It would look amazing sent in a custom solid gold pendant!
