Item details

New size! XS Tiny dried mixed butterflies. Mixed species, unmounted (papered). Teeny Tiny butterflies, perfect size for cabs and jewelry. Each one is about the size of my thumbnail, when folded up. Sizes vary somewhat, but these are the smallest ones I get. Quality is generally A- to A2, meaning antennae could be missing or broken. I've also come across a few with wing chips, but that's not the majority. I can't judge the quality or color very well without opening them, so you get a good price here and don't be surprised if you get one or two with some minor wing damage. No big deal if you're just using them for jewelry. Colors vary, but the most common colors for XS butterflies like these are blues, orange, grey, black & white. Most of these are from the Lycaenid family. They usually have patterns of some kind on the wings. Sold individually, these can be quite collectible. I have been lucky to get several in with my mixed bags lately.

These are dead and dried out, exactly how I recieve them from my suppliers. Each butterfly is in its own wax paper envelope. Their wings are folded, so they would need to be re-hydrated and spread before you could display them. They could also be disassembled and the wings could be used in other craft projects. If you'd prefer me to remove the wings for you, just leave me a "note to seller" with your order.

Actual Feedback from a customer:
Specimens arrived on time and in excellent condition as promised, thoughtfully packaged by seller. She also gave great advice on rehydrating and pinning, so just about anybody should be able to do it. Wonderful communication.

Framed Art Displaying Information:

Although the materials I use are acid-free, the insects are not. Therefore, they may be subject to fading over time if not displayed properly. To display your insects properly, do not expose them to direct sunlight. Some insects, such as butterflies and moths, are more susceptible to fading, while other insects, such as beetles, don't fade hardly at all. Hallways, rooms with one or two small windows, and basements are all great places to display insects. However, they can be placed in almost any room in the house with a little common sense.

Jewelry pieces have been tested for durability, and each piece comes with care instructions. I expect them to last for many years with the proper care.

FAQs

The most frequently asked question I get is "do you catch the bugs yourself?". I do not usually catch them myself. The insects I use are not usually from the USA.

The second most frequently asked question I get is "are these bugs real? Do they really look like that in the wild?" The answer to that question is usually 'yes'. The vast majority of my insects have not been altered in any way; I choose to work with the most impressive kinds of insects in order to show you how beautiful insects can be. I do occasionally paint or otherwise decorate some of my insects in order to make an artistic statement. If this has been done, it should be obvious and I will make it clear in my item description.

Where do your bugs come from?
