Corian is a popular countertop material and a very good alternative to ivory for scrimshaw as well as carving. It works and scrims similar to ivory, polishes to a high luster if desired and costs far less than mammoth ivory (which is still my favorite). This "tombstone" piece is perfect for creating a display piece that can be incorporated into a jewelry box or displayed on an ornate stand.
Polished to a satin finish, it takes India ink very well, oil paint not so well, and sharpies tend to stain and cloud the material (not recommended). This display piece is from a sheet of "arctic white".
