Item details

10" long spindle stick, or staff, made from oak with the characteristic "belly" of a medieval spindle.

If you would like a 3 pack of differing woods, please see my listings for walnut, cherry or hickory.

All spindles are finished with linseed or tung oil and polished with my beeswax-mineral oil paste polish to protect against moisture and promote grip. Spindles which are notched have been reinforced at the tip with a wood hardener for strength.

Spindles can be custom made to the length you require. One only needs to note the length you wish upon ordering. This will not affect pricing.

All spindles have been tested for balance and come with the yarn spun as a result, which you can use as a lead yarn.

This spindle comes with the option to add a small maintenance kit, limit one per order, which consists of two pieces of sandpaper, a dab of my beeswax-mineral oil polish and a square of flannel for the care and feeding of your spindle. This kit now includes 2-3 clear hair ties to secure the whorl, should you feel the need.

Included is the option to leave your spindle plain or notched. I offer low and high whorl notches, and a spiral notch which is useful for supported spinning. All spiral notch spindles will be made for clockwise spinning, as pictured, unless you request otherwise. A spindle can be notched both high and low upon request.

When taking advantage of the new mix it up three-pack for plying, please indicate which notches you would like. I've added this option for clarity in pricing. Also, if you are ordering a three-pack, and would also like a maintenance kit, please let me know and one will be included at no extra cost.

Spindles are displayed with whorls (sold separately).

Take advantage of my free shipping offer for all orders $50 and over with coupon code 50FREE at checkout

Each spindle now comes in its own convenient reuse-able case made from up-cycled paper which you can use as a travel or storage case.

It has been fun trying the spindle stick without the notch. I can see myself having an equal amount of notched and un-notched sticks. All her spindles are awesome.

This is very beautiful. I never spun with anything like this and I'm not very good yet, but this feels nice to hold. I'm sure that I'll be learning in no time...

Really well made! Historically on point and easy to work with. It fit my medium Roman whorls just fine.

Additional policies

I am happy to take custom orders, and if there is any piece which you wanted but missed out on, or would like in a different stone, I will do my best to accommodate your wishes.

I can also create pieces according to your specifications like weight, shape, e.g if you wanted a piece described in "Prehistoric Textiles" by EJW Barber p. 307, or if you perhaps tell me you would like a conical, flat topped 4 cm diameter and 2 cm deep whorl in, say, soapstone, I can work with that. In cases such as these, I will send photos as a piece progresses in case adjustments or changes are needed.

Please understand, though, that each item is individually made, so while I may attempt to replicate a whorl, there will be small differences here or there.

Custom pieces will take anywhere from a day to a week depending on complexity.

Ordering over the weekend:
Orders placed over the weekend may experience some delay for two reasons. The first is due to USPS hours of operation, and the second is due to my work schedule at my other job. I apologize for any inconvenience this may incur.

I am able to rush orders if needed, so if you are under a time constraint, please let me know so that I can accommodate your needs.

***INTERNATIONAL ORDERS***
Please note that international buyers are responsible for any customs, VAT or handling charges that their purchase may incur.
