This listing is for the download of a PDF sewing pattern to make a quilted dressage saddle pad with billet and girth straps. It is NOT for a physical paper pattern. Two lengths are included- regular and long.
The print pad in the photos was sewn by SuitAbility customer Suzanne Kloepfer using a previous version of this pattern (see below). The baby blue pad is a SuitAbility prototype- the synthetic fleece on top is a modification not included in the pattern and billet straps were left off. Neither of these pads is for sale.
The PDF file includes instructions illustrated with diagrams and the pad pattern piece. Download the file using Adobe Reader and print out the pages using 8 1/2" by 11" or A4 paper.
The first consideration when choosing materials is what thickness of layers your sewing machine can handle. There are many options, but a good starting point is to use heavyweight cotton or cotton blend fabric for the upper layer, quilt batting for the inner layer, and brushed cotton twill for the under layer. An easy option is to use two or three layers of double-faced pre-quilted fabric. The layers still must be quilted together, but you then have the existing quilting lines as a guide.
For the topline seam and straps, use nylon or polypropylene webbing. To bind pad edges use foldover braid or other bias bindings. We’ve had good luck using cotton-polyester double fold bias binding, which holds up surprisingly well and comes in many different colors.
REGULAR LENGTH PAD: EACH LAYER requires 1 1/2 YDS of 45” wide fabric OR 3/4 YD of 60” wide fabric. Also needed: 3/4 YD 2” wide webbing for topline seam, 4 1/8 YDS edge binding, 1 1/8 YDS 1” wide webbing for billet and girth straps, thread.
LONG LENGTH PAD: EACH LAYER requires 1 5/8 YDS of 45” wide fabric OR 7/8 YD of 60” wide fabric. Also needed: 3/4 YD 2” wide webbing for topline seam, 4 3/8 YDS edge binding, 1 1/8 YDS 1” wide webbing for billet and girth straps, thread.
PLEASE NOTE: This PDF pattern is essentially the same as the quilted dressage pad included in the SuitAbility paper version Pattern 7158.
