This ribbon is divine! It is a true ikat--the floral motif is printed on the yarns of one direction only, and woven with plain white yarns in the other direction, resulting in a gorgeous watercolor effect. This ribbon is rayon and looks and feels like lightweight silk taffeta. The border is yellow satin and the main part consists of coral and orange flowers with green foliage on a white ground. It measures 3 15/16" wide.
Ikat, or chine a la branche, was an exotic and popular decorative element in the 18th century. Consider using this as a border around the hem of a petticoat. It is wide enough that it can be tapered in and manipulated to go around the robings of an 18th century dress, too. Ikat continued to be popular in the 19th century, making this appropriate for a variety of costume eras.
