Midway through Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the characters discover that the evil Count has power over Mina Harker, and is able to come to her while the men who would protect her sleep soundly. After Jonathan Harker hears his wife tell him about Count Dracula drinking her blood while he lay asleep beside her, he is understandably shaken. He opens a journal entry with the words, “As I must do something or go mad, I write this diary.”
The phrase “I must do something or go mad” struck me as a perfect one to use for a very traditional sort of sampler design. I had the idea that for some women in the past, stitching sampler after sampler might have grown wearisome, yet they had no other occupation to fill their time. I imagined a person with nothing else to do but stitch a sampler, and sneaking the phrase into the alphabet. To keep with the gothic theme of the source text, rather than images of houses and flowers around the alphabet, I designed rows of bats, spiders, tombstones, a “poison” style skull-and-crossbones, and a castle, all worked in black.
This pattern measures 143 x 177 stitches. The sample was worked on white 14ct Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures 10.21” x 12.64”. It took about 30 hours to stitch.
