Item details

This Balinese traditional cloth, Kain Singapura, is a vibrant red colour with a gold brocade rose motif, and this listing is for a 2 meter length of it.

The Balinese use miles of this fabric that plays an important role in their ceremonial life.

Red is one of three most important colours for Balinese Hindus, being one of the Tri Datu representing the three gods of the universe - red for Brahma, white for Siwa (Shiva) and black for Wisnu (Vishnu).

This fabric is 111cm wide, and there are good selvages - visible in the second and third photos - but please be aware that the sides where the fabric was cut from the bolt are prone to fraying.

You can see the reverse side of the fabric in my third photo.

PAYPAL is my preferred method of payment. Don't have it? You can still pay that way using your credit card. Just click on the PayPal icon at checkout and follow the prompts.

Like so many elements of Balinese life, textiles such as kain Singapura are offerings to the gods.

Lengths of the fabric are used as ider-ider - clothing for the temples - as seen in my final photo.

You can also see it used as clothing for the dwarapala statues that guard the entryway to a Balinese temple, palace or more commonly now, a family compound, as shown in the photo.
“We sleep, but the loom of life never stops, and the pattern which was weaving when the sun went down is weaving when it comes up in the morning.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher, Liberal US Congregational minister, 1813-1887
