Brief History of Hawaiian Quilting: Ancient Hawaiians made Kapa Moe, an indigenous textile created from the bark of the mulberry tree. The bark was beaten into layers, and then plant dyes were applied in geometric patterns. Kapa Moe was used for clothing and bed covers. When the missionaries arrived in 1820, they introduced patchwork quilting. Hawaiians adapted quilting with cotton fabric in their own way. Inspired by the shadows cast by the leaves and fruit of the breadfruit tree, the first Hawaiian quilt design was born. The appliqué was cut from a single piece of folded fabric much like a paper snowflake. After the appliqué was completed, the quilting began.
The idea of echo quilting was born out of the love of the ocean. Each line surrounding the design represented a wave lapping the shoreline. Dips in the design represent the valleys and peaks represent the mountains. Every quilt that was made had a story to tell. Sometimes the meaning was hidden. The maker would sleep with the quilt to impart their Mana (strength and spirituality) before presenting the quilt as a gift to a special person or for an important occasion.
