Item details

****This listing is not for a finished item - it is for a downloadable PDF pattern.****

This pattern is for a 14 inch gusseted shell and insert, with an optional flat shell for the inserts. The pattern includes all the piece needed for the shell, insert, and flat shell.

The finished measurements for the gusseted shell are 14" long and approximately 3" wide at the center when snapped.

The finished measurements for the flat shell are 13" long and approximately 3.25" wide at the center when snapped.

The finished measurements for the insert are 12.5" long and approximately 3" wide at the narrowest point.

Measurements may vary slightly depending on the overall thickness of the pad, and snap placement.

This listing includes patterns for the gusseted shell, flat shell, and insert, and a detailed instructional PDF on how to construct all three parts.

Fabric: For this pattern, any fabric used in regular menstrual pads is suitable. PUL is recommended for the inner layer, gussets, and pocket pieces of the gusseted shell and flat shell, but any other fabric may be used as the outer layer. For the insert, your fabric options are more varied. This pattern is fully customizable to your preferences and needs.

Fabric Required: Less than 1 yard total; fabric requirements will vary based on what options you choose. For the gusseted shell, a minimum of 18 x 15" for the outer shell, gussets, and wings, and a minimum of 15" x 15" for the inner layer and pockets. For the flat shell, a minimum of 1/2 yard to make all pieces of the same fabric, or 15" x 17" of the outer fabric and 15" x 15" for the inner fabric. For the insert, 7.5" x 15" for the top and back fabrics, and 5.5" x 12.75" for each layer of core fabric.

Accessories: For the winged versions of the gusseted and flat shells, you will need a closure of some sort, such as snaps, a button, or hook & loop.

Experience Level: Intermediate to Experienced - Attaching the gussets requires some experience and patience, although a careful beginner with some experience should be able to follow the directions in the tutorial to complete the gusseted shell. As always, attention to detail and correct seam allowance are important.

Additional policies

There are several different shapes and sizes of Sweet Dragon pad patterns to choose from.

The flared patterns have wider ends, and a more centered wing. They were designed for women who need all-over coverage.

The pear patterns were designed for petite women, and women who need more coverage in the back than in the front. The smaller sizes (13" and under) are narrower when the wings are snapped than most of the flared patterns. The larger patterns (14" and over) have more front coverage and are wider than the smaller sizes.

All pattern purchases include a detailed photo tutorial on pad construction, that includes basic pad construction, as well as tutorials for hidden cores, wing-only top stitched pads, and exposed core pads. The patterns are also designed to be made with or without wings, and cutting lines for the wingless patterns are included on all the standard shaped pad patterns. The novelty pad patterns do not include wingless options at this time.

Pattern assembly:

To assemble your patterns, simply align the gray boxes with the edges next to each other, not overlapping, and tape together. If you prefer, you can trim the white margin off of the page that will overlap before taping it down. The core pattern is nestled inside the pad pattern.

Patterns 9" or less print on a single page.
Patterns 10" - 13", and the 14" pear pattern, print on 2 pages.
The 14" and 15" flare patterns, and the 15"-19" pear patterns, print on 3 pages.
The 17" and 19" flare patterns print on 4 pages.

For a standard or wingless pad, you will need to print 2 copies of the pattern pages (one to create the top and back pattern, and one for the core). For an exposed core pad, you will need to print 3 copies of the pattern.

The 14" gusseted shell set is one of my pet projects. It is a smaller gusseted shell than others that are available on the market (although it's big sister, a 16" version, is already in the works), and includes a flat shell that allows you to continue to use the inserts even after the gusseted shell is no longer needed.

All Sweet Dragon Cloth Patterns were designed from scratch by me, and I retain all rights to the patterns themselves. This means you may not resell, redistribute, share, or copy the patterns in any way. These patterns may not be used for corporate production.

If you are a small or home-based business, you may sell the items you make from these patterns. I would appreciate acknowledgement as the pattern designer, but it is not required.
