I purchased this many years ago from a tool dealer. He claimed it was the axe that George Washington had cut done the fabled cherry tree.Upon examining it, I said the handle looked new. He said the endless owners used it hard and had to change the broken handle many times. OK I said, but the head has a 20th century manufacture's name stamped into it. Oh yes He explained, it too had to be replaced when the the original head had broken. He then assured me that other than the head and handle, it was original and occupied the same space as the original. I then refinished the handle and signed it just as George would if he had a laser engraver. The handle is Osage Orange and the head is stamped AGE MFG. CO.
