Item details

Handspinning. It's the next logical step in your fiber journey and a gateway to color blending, texture, and the use of local fiber. Yet it's a huge leap into new territory. I know. So I've put together a simple basic drop spindle with nice wool and a booklet with the same steps I've used in person to help dozens of newbies get started.

The spindle is a top whorl with a hook, and slightly rim-weighted. Rim-weighted gives you a longer spin than center-weighted, and compared to a bottom whorl with no hook, the top whorl with hook gives you more speed at winding finished yarn on the shaft.

The spindle is assembled by me from off the shelf machine-made parts, and it is machine-engraved by an outside contractor using my original artwork of a sheep face. I've put a helpful sticker on the whorl to show you which way to spin the spindle; it comes off easily once you gain practice.

The hook is large to take thick and thin yarn. The shaft is 12 inches (30 cm) long; the weight is about 2 ounces (56 grams) which is on the heavy side but within reason.

I have been able to spin singles yarn as thin as 32 wraps per inch on this spindle, which when plied should give a fingering weight 2 ply yarn.

The wool is a minimum of 1.5 ounces in weight, in white and naturally dark un-dyed Corriedale sheep's wool. Corriedale is a medium to long stapled wool considered easy for beginners to spin into yarn. I picked un-dyed wool because I find it is less compacted and therefore easier to spin than dyed wool. The indigo-dyed wool in the second photo is not included, it is to show you an example of yarn spun on the spindle.

Are you thinking about trying to spin yarn with a spindle, and wondering if you'll like it? I know a number of handspinners who use spinning wheels and dislike the spindle or feel uncomfortable with it, preferring the wheel. I use a spindle exclusively when I spin, I like it best. I've bundled this kit so you can try making yarn at a modest price and get an idea whether you'd like to continue and upgrade to a beautiful spindle or wheel. Learning to spin takes about the same effort as learning to type or skate or ride a bicycle. Many, many people used spindles for thousands of years to make good yarn.

There is a directory of guilds on the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. website, http://weavespindye.org. You can also find guilds through Ravelry groups. I recommend visiting your local handspinners guild. A guild is like a meetup group, usually with an educational emphasis.

This kit pairs well with the wool "tasting" kit I sell separately, which has wool from a number of different sheep breeds to try out. Each has interesting qualities.
