Babies need comfortable, lightweight hats with brims to protect their eyes from glare and their soft delicate skin from excessive sun. A safari-style cotton crochet bucket hat is a great gift for a baby shower, a one year old birthday party or simply to say I love you.
This hatband features tapestry-style crochet with a choice of two motifs. The candy stripe motif is easy and perfect for beginners while the falling leaves motif is slightly more challenging. If you prefer not to do tapestry crochet, a plain wide stripe in a contrasting color or in a variegated yarn is also effective.
The brim rolls or folds to give it a firmer structure without the need for hat wire. This is a feature which makes the hat very comfortable for babies.
You will need fingering weight or 4 ply baby cotton yarn and a 3.00 mm or size D hook to work this pattern. Sullivans International crochet and knitting cotton (natural soft) is recommended for this baby hat because it is lightweight (fingering) cotton, it comes in a variety of rich colors and the thread is well suited to tapestry crochet.
Note: While Sullivans crochet cotton is readily available in Australia, if may be hard to find in USA. I have therefore added instructions for Size 3 Fashion Thread by Coats or Red Heart which is available in most Walmarts and requires a 3.5 mm or size E hook. The black hat with turquoise and gold stripe hatband was worked in Size 3 Fashion cotton yarn.
