1--5 oz, 250 yd. skein of Leicester Longwool, DK, 2 ply worsted; 14 wpi.
Mill Spun, $40.00 each
The subtle glow of this delightful, pure white LLW yarn gives it texture and appeal not found in any other wool. It comes courtesy of Ernest, our wool-maker extraordinaire. His annually shorn fleece consistently weighs a whopping 18-21 lbs with locks over a foot long!
Specs on LLW: Bradford Spinning Count of 38-48, fiber diameter 31-38 microns; softer & finer than Cotswold or Lincoln.
The even texture and long staple of LLW make this a versatile wool ideal for knitting, rug making, tapestries, wall hangings, felting, weaving and soft furnishings. It is prized by hand knitters & weavers for its handle, luster & dye acceptance.
LLW's produce prodigious amounts of wool with raw fleeces weighing 18 to 20 pounds. The wool has a luster unlike any other. It drapes the sheep in 8-12 inch evenly spiraled & crimped locks ending in a flat base.
Leicester Longwool Sheep are a Heritage Breed, listed as "threatened" by the Livestock Conservancy (livestockconservancy.org). When you buy our wool you are helping preserve this phenomenal dual purpose breed that has influenced the sheep industry since the 18th century.
The fleece for this yarn was raised on our Maine farm and processed at a New York mill. Go to the American Wool Council's website to learn more about wool, "the only fiber crafted for the purpose of meeting any purpose." https://www.americanwool.org/
