Item details

A couple years ago I visited my daughter in Brooklyn, New York. She was renting a room in a huge brownstone with five roommates, a dog and two neglected ferns. The neighborhood was relatively quiet and, seriously, what's not to love about the Big Apple? I'm from Detroit and Motown's a whole different kind of crazy!

As she took me through her new apartment, I peeked into each room as I got acquainted with her new home. When she opened the door to the last bedroom I saw this amazingly colorful "star" afghan spread over the big antique bed. I was immediately drawn to the colors chosen, the beauty of the handiwork, and the overall size of the stars. As a life-long knitter and crocheter I'm always looking for new and unique designs. Later when I met her roommates, I asked the one who had the star afghan if he had the pattern. It turned out that his grandmother had crocheted it for him years ago and he knew of no pattern to follow. Darn.

He graciously allowed me to take photos. After I got home and unpacked my bags from the trip, I decided to design my own version of this eye-catching afghan.

My original design ~ ~ ~ ~ Brooklyn Star "granny-square" afghan pattern is my interpretation of the original throw I saw on that trip to Brooklyn. Worsted weight yarn is used in 12 beautiful shades. The afghan pictured was crocheted using Lion-Brand Wool-Ease, which is a machine washable blend of acrylic and wool. It can also be crocheted with any worsted-weight yarn; Berroco "Weekend" is another good choice.

The Star design of each motif is easily mastered by a crocheter who has some experience with granny square techniques. Step-by-step instructions and photos are included in the download with some suggested time-saving techniques of my own. Each motif is edged with two colors and assembled between smaller circles in a pleasing-to-the-eye pattern. A color placement guide is included for finishing the project.

Is there someone in your life who could use a warm "hug"? A hand crocheted, soft blanket is the perfect gift to share your love with someone special.

Everyone knows that an afghan made for a wedding shower is an heirloom gift and much appreciated for many years to come. This pattern can be also crocheted in soft pastel colors for a new baby in your family. Teens or college students may love it in their school colors. You don't have to use the colors I suggest.
