Rolf Armstrong (1889 - 1960), Michigan born son of a tugboat captain, worked as a longshoreman and amateur boxer before attending the School of Art Institute of Chicago. His first pastel illustrations of exotic women were published in 1912, leading to his designation as the "father of American pin-up."
