Tall ~ Stately ~ Sacred ~ Edible

The mother loved them years ago;
Beside the fence they used to grow,
And though the garden changed each year
And certain blooms would disappear
To give their places in the ground
To something new that mother found,
Some pretty bloom or rosebush rare --
The hollyhocks were always there . . .Edgar A Guest

Though most folks associate the Hollyhock with Victorian Cottage Gardens, this exotic bloom has a fascinating history dating as far back as 50,000 years to a Neanderthal burial site. Thus, we know it was extremely important and sacred at a very early time for humanity. Also of interest to the theme of this flower being "sacred" is the company it kept, including; The Knight's Crusaders, who believed the flower had healing qualities and named it 'Holly'hock for the 'Holy' Land. Yet this sacred bloom also found a happy home among Japanese Shogun's and Tutor Royalty! In fact, the use of this flower in non-traditional Cottage Gardens may have been the first time Hollyhocks were ever used by non-priest or grown outside sanctioned royal gardens!

Now you can add this easy to grow royal beauty with its stately 6-8' stalks and intense burgundy wine blooms, as a living backdrop to your Cottage, Goth or Night Garden! Mix with Double White Hollyhocks to create a Black & White garden or add several colors to create a bold privacy wall splashed in color! Also see: Rare Black Hollyhocks and Wine Hollyhocks.

Flowers, seeds, roots and leaves of Hollyhock are all edible! The blooms have been used as culinary decoration for centuries. Just roll in egg white, powder with sugar and let dry to make candy Victorian Belle flowers. The leaves can be used in the same manner you would use spinach leaves, raw, cooked or baked. The seeds can be eaten raw or added to salads. And the roots were used for medicinal cures.

Fall is a good time to direct sow Hollyhocks for a early showing!

I won't be planting them until next Spring so I can't say what they look like but I wanted to say what a great shopping experience it was. Very fast shipping. Great instruction enclosed.
