My husband and I have been watching a lot of tattoo shows lately. For the record, he has 18, I have 0. But I've really been loving the look of the sugar skull girls, which is what inspired this piece.
The design use a conglomeration of various skulls I found online. Then I traced the elements in a cross stitch software. Unlike some patterns, this was not a simple "click to convert" process - a lot of work went into making the outlines bold and the colors pop.
The pattern is about 100x140 stitches, but you can cut down on the work by not filling in the outline. If you work it on cloth with 20 stitches to the inch, your finished product will measure about 5" x 7". I'm current working it on 11 gauge cloth, which will come out around 9" x 13". The boldness and simplicity lends itself to many sizes.
There other thing I wanted to do with this pattern is keep the colors to a minimum. Besides black and white, there are only 4 colors. I chose blue, red, yellow, and purple, but you could switch those up to do different shades, or even go black and grey.
So, I hope you like my first sugar skull girl, and yes I say "first" because I'd love to do more. As I work it up myself I will post pictures. I'll eventually have to decide whether to keep her for myself or add a listing for the finished product.
As with all my cross stitch patterns, this listing is just for the downloadable pattern. I'm also happy to do custom orders for full kits (printed pattern, floss, needle, cloth, and hoop) and completed works.
