I made The Darcy Overalls for my son when he was nearly a year old and we were planning a hike in the High Country in late Autumn. I wanted him to be comfortable and able to play on wet ground and in puddles, and also to have light-weight clothing that would pack well when hiking. They are also perfect for rock pool exploration!
The overalls have plenty of width to allow for normal clothing underneath, and for comfort while walking, crawling and sitting in a baby carrier. This extra width also leaves freedom at the waist to avoid the pants becoming sauna-like when your little one has a wet nappy, and allow for easy nappy changes.
These overalls are designed to be constructed from a waterproof but breathable fabric, and are waterproof up to the high waistline. The design minimises seams, with no outer side seams in the pants section. The closed toe option can be used so your child doesn’t need to wear shoes in the wet (especially good for the pre-walkers), or the open-footed option can be used in combination with gumboots or other shoes.
The pattern includes advice and instructions regarding sourcing and working with waterproof fabrics, including seam-sealing.
Of course, you can use this pattern to make overalls for your child in any fabric! Just ignore the instructions regarding water-proofing if this is the case.
Advanced beginner. No waterproofing experience required.
