Antique Ro silk and brocade obi (sash for kimono) handmade in Japan 1910
This lovely obi intended as a sash for a traditional Japanese kimono, features brocade sections andecru colored Ro silk. The brocade is in beautiful shades of ice blue, light blue, white and silver on ecru alternating with ecru colored Ro silk background. Ro silk has fine ridges in it, similar to silk faille in the west, but with wider ridges. The ecru color forms a background for the areas that have brocade patterns. Part of the obi is solid ecru with no brocade. The colored brocade areas feature elegant leaf and wave patterns, flowers and birds with rose colored highlights. There are tiny black details (bird beaks, flower centers, pods on leaves).
This obi is a work of art. It can be displayed on the wall or from a balcony (as shown), used as a long table runner or window hanging.
It is an exquisite example of traditional Japanese textile art. It is good condition. There is a worn spot on one edge and some small brown tea stains on the solid Ro silk sections. (See detail photos) The delicately colored brocade is all intact.
This obi can be re-purposed into other apparel, accessory items or works of art. Ingenious crafters make hand bags and applique clothing details out of obis like this. The brocade sections are pictorial and could be framed separately.
Can be use as an obi to accessorize anime, cosplay or other Japanese kimono costumes.
Collectible antique. Art deco (about 1910) Pure Ro silk and brocade. Brocade pattern appears on both sides. Good condition with a little wear.
