Ginger Root / Rhizome, Zingiber officinale, horn-root, Grow some Tropicals, Medicinal Plant
Order is for one (1) Rhizome, easy to grow, sprouts in the heat, Exotic Flower, May be grown in a pot.
When your root (s) arrive pot them up and water, keep moist but allow the soil to dry out briefly between waterings. Do not leave the roots in soggy wet soil for lengths of time or the roots will rot. If for any reason part of the root rots cut that section off - allow the wounded area to air dry and seal, then repot. Usually the roots are shipped with growing tips already sprouted, sometimes not. The plant is easy to grow and should be place in a location of indirect sunlight, in warmer climates under trees or other shade. The root may not grow a stalk of leaves until the following spring. Ginger will grow in the warm month and go dormant in the winter and re emerge in the spring / summer again and again.
Feel free to order this plant/root an any time, but please be aware that we SHIP PLANTS APRIL through JULY and SEPTEMBER through NOVEMBER only.
Orders received outside these months will be automatically backordered.
(Zingiber officinale ) belongs to the Zingiberaceae plant family, which also includes turmeric and
cardamom. Ginger comes from the Sanskrit word "horn-root." It grows in Jamaica, India, Haiti, Hawaii, and Nigeria. This perennial plant grows 3–4 ft (0.9–1.2 m) tall. It has thin, sharp leaves 6–12 in (15–30 cm) long. The tangled, beige root is used medicinally, and can be 1–6 in (2.5–15 cm) in length. The root has a sharp, pungent taste and aroma.
Getting ginger to form roots is very easy, provided you follow a few crucial steps to keep them from rotting. The trick is to plant ginger roots when it's warm outside, plant them in sphagnum moss or another breathable medium and go easy on the water until they form leaves and can be repotted.
Select a Healthy Root. The best roots (rhizomes) for growing are firm, fleshy and already have green points forming at the end of the 'fingers.' If you prefer, cut the ginger into separate pieces with at least one green tip per segment and allow to dry for a few days.
Soak the Roots Overnight in warm water. This will stimulate growth and rinse off any chemicals that might be present. A few of my friends have also had a lot of success soaking their various root crops in compost tea, believe it or not!
Set the Roots in Sphagnum Moss (or coconut fiber) so that the top of the root is visible, with the green growing tips pointing up. I used a propagating tray, but you can use any container wide enough to accommodate the root. Keep the sphagnum moss lightly moist, but allow it to dry out between waterings .( I have also potted up in soil)
Transplant to a Pot once the first leaves have formed. At this point you should notice a mass of fleshy white roots, which can be gently teased loose from the moss. Hold the root just beneath the edge of the pot, and fill the pot with fresh potting mix so that the fine roots are surrounded and the top of the rhizome is barely visible.
Caring for Your Ginger is easy, as long as you provide warmth, humidity, moisture and drainage. Summer is the best time to grow ginger because it's already hot and humid, but if you're growing it indoors you can place it in a bright windowsill and occasionally mist it with water. Drainage is provided by simply using a pot with drainage holes.

These factors are totally out of the seller's control, and germination and growing results are the buyer's responsibility and risk. Seller cannot be responsible for buyers growing methods or mistakes. All seed sales are final. No refunds or replacements after the 5 days have expired.
