This is an alphabet sampler created from medieval sources. Seven of the lions have been adapted from textiles dating between the 7th century and 16th century. The eighth lion is from a 14th-century manuscript illumination. The alphabet is adapted from the 8th-century Irish half-uncial script. The mouse has been borrowed from a 13th-century Spanish manuscript, and the border design comes from a 6th-century Swedish brooch.
