This design was created from medieval sources. The northern knight and his adventures are adapted from a carved roundel on the wooden door of a church in Iceland. Dating from ca. 1200, it depicts a version of the popular Lion-Knight legend where a knight slays a dragon, thereby freeing a lion that becomes his companion. The original base below the dead lion contains a runic inscription.
