FAQs

I'm happy to customize/personalize any order. Just ask! I can add basic embroidery (like a name or birthdate) to any quilt or memory animal for $5. Or I can add photos to any quilt starting at $10.

All of my quilts are a large throw size (roughly 50"x60"). The more squares on the quilt, the smaller they are. You can read the exact sizing and dimension of the squares in each listing. I can do smaller quilts, but I don't offer larger sizes. The materials I work with are thick and heavy. The bulk and weight of the fabric limits the size of them. My memory animals range in size. Most are 12"-18". Many of them can be adjusted up or down in size if you like. Just ask!

My turn around time varies but is typically between 4-6 months. Plan ahead! I keep an update in the shop announcement at the top of the page with a general idea of my current turn around time. It can change quickly with one large order, so if you need your items for a special occasion, try no to cut it too close to your date. IF YOU A GRIEVING THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE, PLEASE CONTACT ME. I SET ASIDE TIME IN MY SCHEDULE FOR EMERGENCY BEREAVEMENT ORDERS AND MAY BE ABLE TO GET YOUR MEMORY ANIMAL OR QUILT TO YOU MORE QUICKLY.

Unlike a lot of larger quilting sites, The Paper Pincushion has 1 seamstress: me. That means that I will be the one to take your order and communicate with you regarding questions and progress. I don't hand over your project to anyone else to complete. I only work on one order at a time, so I am entirely focused on your project. I take my time with your memories. You handed them over to me because they are precious to you and you want to preserve them, and in turn they are precious to me and I care about them. I finish every project with a sense of pride. I love what I do and I want that to reflect in every order that leaves my hands.

Yes, please. This is especially important if your clothing is new or has been stored for a while. Many people pull their baby clothes out of storage to find that they are covered in stains that weren' t there when they were put into storage! That's because the proteins in breast milk [and other things], turn fabric yellow over time. So, please wash and treat any stains that you don't want to be included in your quilt.

I have a unique process that I have perfected over the years. It allows me to keep all the character and dimension of your clothing intact. Pockets remain functional. Embellishments keep their dimension. Traditional quilting styles can ruin screen prints and appliqués and in many cases can require outsourcing to a long-arm machine. I do 100% of the quilting myself, in my studio, so that you can feel comfortable knowing your precious materials are in my skilled hands at all times.

Of course! On quilts I can use the backs of shirts to accent your primary pieces. Its a great way to show off your favorite onesies or t-shirts. On any order we can add new fabric to fill in an compliment/contrast the pieces you have. Memory animals almost always look better with solid pieces for contrast (usually around the feet/face). In most cases I'm happy to add new fabric for no extra cost. Just ask!

These memory quilts are meant to be loved! Don't be afraid to use yours. We use my t-shirt quilt as a picnic/beach quilt regularly. My quilts are entirely machine washable. (The only exception would be if the materials that you provide me to make your quilt with are dry clean only, it will be a good idea to dry clean your quilt.) All of the fabrics that I use on the back are the highest quality cuddle fabrics available and are fully machine washable. I wash my quilt on the gentle cycle and dry it on low.

Each bear that I make is a high quality, hand-crafted treasure. I pay attention to important details, such as stabilizing stretchy fabrics, notching curves, appliquéing the ears & hearts. This ensures that your bear will hold its shape for years to come, have smooth seams, and perfect satin stitching. A lot of the bears that are sold for lesser prices skip these invisble, yet crucial steps and it leads to less professional-looking project. I've seen bears that are made from the same pattern that I use, but look nothing like the bears I make because the rushed jobs yield shapless faces and lumpy limbs.

Sure! I have patterns for several other animals and I will be happy to add to my collection if there's a specific animal you're looking for. I list several other animals in my shop, and I have a lot of patterns the I don't have listings for. I LOVE trying new patterns and will usually acquire a pattern for an animal that I don't have for no extra cost. All you need to do is ask! Contact me with your ideas!

In most cases the shipping charges are accurate (minky is HEAVY), but if there is ever a shipping discrepancy in my favor of $1 or more, I will absolutely refund you the difference. You don't even need to ask, I will do it as soon as your fabric ships.
