Handmade Pincushion - Soft Sculpture Foot in Pink Leather Shoe - My Right Foot, Chocolate
Another chapter in my line of pincushions made with soft sculpture feet - this one is presented in an adorable soft pink leather shoe. This is a soft, unlined ballet slipper/shoe with a soft suede sole - decorated at the center front with a pink ribbon rosebud. The shoe was gently used, but the only indication is the slightly discolored sole - they are very faint, but tiny little "toe prints" show that someone's darling daughter wore these shoes. The shoe is 4.75" long x 2.5" wide. Inside, the removable soft sculpture foot is 4.5" x 2.75" x 1.75" in depth. The foot has been made the same way a soft sculpture foot for a doll is made - with five toes, and the bottom of the foot is touched with pink blush, because it amuses me.
I realize the idea of a pincushion made from a baby shoe is NOT a new idea. However, to my knowledge, I am the first to market this particular idea, an actual soft sculpture foot inside the shoe! Imagine my surprise when I did not have to consult a pattern or a book to make the toes. It had been perhaps 10 years since I made one of these soft sculpture dolls. I can't remember my mother's maiden name, but years afterwards, I remember how to make soft sculpture feet worthy of any soft sculpture doll. Unbelievable!! And, as you might notice, I have been getting lots of practice - making a number of different foot pincushions in different styles of childrens shoes and slippers for my Etsy shop. The foot is removable, because what is the point of buying a shoe with a soft sculpture foot unless you can remove the foot and giggle? In order to reinsert the foot, just like Cinderella's stepsisters, there might be some squeezing and twisting, but it will go back in. Once the foot is back in the shoe, I gently put my finger inside, behind the rosebud, to gently push out any "dent" in the toe box - because these are unlined, the toe box doesn't always look like toes are in it - and of course, the soft sculpture foot is ever so slightly shorter than the shoe, just as it would be in your own shoes. Then, as a final step, I like to gently pull the heel portion of the foot upward just a bit, in order to fill the area where the ankle usually is. The exposed portion of the foot that shows inside the neck of the shoe - 3" x 1.5"- is generous enough, the perfect spot for pins. But don't put pins through the leather slippers - they will leave holes!!
Just as people come with such amazing variety, so many beautiful "flavors" in appearance, temperament and personality, so should the dolls our little ones play with. While soft sculpture dolls are not as popular as they once were, I was able to procure "dollskin", the stretchy fabric used to make soft sculpture dolls - in two "flavors", chocolate and vanilla.
This pincushion, "My Right Foot - Chocolate", is made using "chocolate" dollskin. Do you like My Right Foot? This perfectly absurd little pincushion might be for you!
