Cutch (Acacia catechu) This powder is an extract prepared from steeping the wood of the Acacia Catechu tree in hot water until a syrupy liquid immerges. This is dried and then ground into powder It is common to most parts of India. India cutch is by far the most beautiful. It is a good source of colorfast browns. Cutch extract contains tannin as well as the dye compound.
It requires 20-50% wof to dye a medium depth of shade. the addition of 10% hydrogen peroxide or 2% dissolved soda ash in the dyebath will dramatically deepen the color. cutch with 2% iron can give dark chocolate color. The dye can be reused few time as cutch dye bath do not exhaust easily and will continue to give light color. Many dyers recommend simmer the fabric in cutch dye bath for 2 hours to get its deepest shade.
