Approximately 11.5-12 inch long spindle stick, or staff, made from one of three woods with the characteristic "belly" on a medieval spindle.
Available is a choice of red oak, walnut or cherry. An option is included for a spiral notch for clockwise or counter-clockwise spinning.
This larger sized flax spindle is a full half inch in diameter and over an inch longer to allow more flax to be spun onto one spindle. For those who prefer to use these spindles for plying, the larger size will allow you to ply larger skeins than my original spindles.
These spindles are designed with the flax spinner in mind. Have you ever wondered how one can spin flax on a drop spindle without using a half hitch knot? This spindle will do that! It comes from the spiral notch, which works with gravity and friction to twist the fiber while staying next to the thumb.
In addition to the deep spiral notch, I have designed this spindle with four strategically placed bands into the spindle to keep the cop in place as you wind on. Flax becomes slippery when dried on the spindle, so these bands are convenient to keep your yarn from displacing itself.
While I have designed this spindle with a thicker diameter so as to be able to support the greater length, I have made sure to taper the bottom point to accommodate any of the whorls I have listed.
While it can, of course, spin any fiber, it is designed for flax spinning.
If you wish to see a demo on using this spindle, I would be happy to create a YouTube video demonstration for you. Please convo me with your request.
All spindles are finished with linseed or tung oil and polished with carnauba or beeswax to protect against moisture and promote grip. Spindles which are notched have been reinforced at the tip with a wood hardener for strength.
Spindles can be custom made to the length you require. One only needs to note the length you wish upon ordering. This will not affect pricing.
All spindles have been tested for balance and come with the yarn spun as a result, which you can use as a lead yarn.
Please add a note to seller to include a small maintenance kit, limit one per order, which consists of two pieces of sandpaper, a dab of my beeswax-mineral oil polish and a square of flannel for the care and feeding of your spindle. This kit now includes 2-3 clear bands to secure the whorl, should you feel the need.

I am happy to take custom orders, and if there is any piece which you wanted but missed out on, or would like in a different stone, I will do my best to accommodate your wishes.
I can also create pieces according to your specifications like weight, shape, e.g if you wanted a piece described in "Prehistoric Textiles" by EJW Barber p. 307, or if you perhaps tell me you would like a conical, flat topped 4 cm diameter and 2 cm deep whorl in, say, soapstone, I can work with that. In cases such as these, I will send photos as a piece progresses in case adjustments or changes are needed.
Please understand, though, that each item is individually made, so while I may attempt to replicate a whorl, there will be small differences here or there.
Custom pieces will take anywhere from a day to a week depending on complexity.
Ordering over the weekend:
Orders placed over the weekend may experience some delay for two reasons. The first is due to USPS hours of operation, and the second is due to my work schedule at my other job. I apologize for any inconvenience this may incur.
I am able to rush orders if needed, so if you are under a time constraint, please let me know so that I can accommodate your needs.
Please note that international buyers are responsible for any customs, VAT or handling charges that their purchase may incur.
