There are many reported health benefits and uses for catnip as an herbal supplement. Some of the uses include treatment for anxiety and insomnia. As noted above, it is often used as for its calming effects on the mind, body and even stomach. Many of its uses are stress relieving in some form or another.
Catnip is useful for a variety of digestive issues from stomach upset, diarrhea and gas. It may also help ease menstrual cramps. Many use catnip for respiratory issues such as cough and congestion. The anti-inflammatory properties of catnip also make it an effective folk treatment for arthritis, hemorrhoids and even to bring down the swelling associated with hives and bug bites.
Nepetalactone is a mosquito and fly repellent. Oil isolated from catnip by steam distillation is a repellent against insects, in particular mosquitoes, cockroaches and termites. Research suggests that distilled nepetalactone repels mosquitoes ten times more effectively than DEET, the active ingredient in most insect repellents. Humans
Nepeta cataria can be brewed to produce a herbal tea. Also used as a culinary herb for many dishes. Catnip can also be ingested through smoking the herb. It has a negligible effect of relaxation like most other "herbal" cigarettes.
Catnip has a history of medicinal use for a variety of ailments. The plant has been consumed as a tea, juice, tincture, infusion or poultice, and has also been smoked. However, its medicinal use has fallen out of favor with the development of more commonplace pharmaceutical drugs.
INSTRUCTIONS CULTIVATE: Requires light to germinate. Catnip contains a percentage of “hard” seeds, so germination can be slow and erratic. Indoors – Soak overnight in a dilute liquid seaweed mixture. Drain and start seeds in individual containers, barely covering with vermiculite. Thin to one plant per cell, pinching out the growing tip for a bushier plant, Transplant to outside when 3” tall. Final plant spacing should be 12 – 18 “. Outdoors – Direct seed 2 – 3 seeds per inch shallowly. Tamp seeds onto surface of the soil, or just barely cover. Rows 18” apart with individual plants thinned to 6 – 12 “apart. Keep the seedbed well weeded. Once established, catnip is very hardy and self sows readily. GERMINATION: 7-10 Days ~ Please Read Below For Important Details ~
