Tutorial: 3D soutache earrings “Seashells”
level * * * *
I’d like to present a slightly different approach of sewing jewelry with colorful braid cords to all lovers of soutache. This is an example of soutache jewelry that allows to create three-dimensional forms, as opposed to traditional designs. 3D Soutache Technique allows to forgo dull and not-so-esthetically-satisfying backings (usually done with felt, thin suede or leather). Finished works are like small sculptures and can be viewed at any angle.
To make these earrings, you will need three colors of soutache braid cord (in this case two shades of orange, and yellow) and eight kinds of beads ranging from 1,6 to 4 mm with gradually increasing sizes. You can use single, or many color of beads.
Supplies needed (for ONE earring):
Soutache braid cord:
– Pale orange: 7×35 cm and 1×5 cm (a total of 2,5 m)
– Dark orange: 35 cm,
– Yellow: 35 cm,
– 2mm round beads: ~100 pcs
– 10/0 rondelle beads:~ 100 pcs
– 11/0 or 15/0 toho rocaille seed beads (for decorative bead embroidery): ~160 pcs;
Thread (I recommend invisible nylon thread);
Fabric and textile glue;
A good pair of scissors;
Earring posts of the right color;
2 jump rings;
