Item details

“’Tis to lose thee, ‘tis to leave thee / Makes me think it hard to die!” counted cross stitch sampler pattern.

This listing is for a PDF copy of the sampler pattern, which is sold as an instant digital download. Included with the pattern is a document containing a DMC floss color chart (which can be modified to suit the stitcher’s tastes) as well as any other relevant information about working the pattern.

In Matthew Lewis’s "The Monk", the monk Ambrosio has been saved on his deathbed by Matilda, who is in love with him. While he lies in bed recovering, she plays the harp and sings him a ballad called “Durandarte and Belerma.” In this song of unrequited love, the following lines are sung by the dying lover: “Ah! Though young I fall, believe me, / Death would never claim a sigh; / ‘Tis to lose thee, ‘tis to leave thee, / Makes me think it hard to die!”

This line seemed destined to be inscribed on a tombstone. For the top of the tombstone, I went with the standard, gothic skull and crossbones, replacing the skull with a heart to better capture the love idea.

This pattern measures 104 x 118 stitches. The sample was worked on white 14ct Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures 7.43 inches by 8.43 inches. It took about 10 hours to stitch.
